EVOLUTION OF BENCH DESIGN FOR CONTEMPORARY PUBLIC SPACES

Abstract

Benches as elements of urban furniture play an important role in shaping a functionally organized and socially oriented public space. They provide opportunities for both short-term and long-term rest, contribute to the rational organization of pedestrian routes, and enhance the overall comfort level of the urban environment. The presence of benches in public spaces positively affects the intensity and duration of users’ stay in the urban environment, thereby activating social interactions.
From the perspective of urban design theory, benches perform not only a utilitarian function but also spatial-organizational and aesthetic roles. They participate in the zoning of territories, the formation of compositional accents, and the creation of the visual identity of space. The structural features, materials, and forms of benches should correspond to the architectural context, climatic conditions, and principles of sustainable development. Particular attention should be paid to ergonomic and inclusive approaches to bench design, which involve consideration of users’ anthropometric parameters, age-related characteristics, and the needs of people with limited mobility. In this context, benches should be regarded as an important component of a comprehensive approach to the formation of a high-quality and accessible urban space.
The aim of the article is to highlight the possibility of systematizing information on the design of benches for urban spaces, which differ in functional purpose, structural characteristics, materials used, and operational properties. As a result, a classification of benches by their classes and corresponding subclasses is proposed. Based on an analysis of historical retrospectives and the challenges of contemporary design practice, alternative design solutions for smart benches are proposed. These combine the traditional function of urban amenities with innovative technological solutions aimed at enhancing user comfort, safety, and functionality.
