Abstract

The article presents a comprehensive study of coloristic solutions of natural elements in traditional Ukrainian ornamental motifs as an important component of national artistic culture. The specifics of the formation of the color language of Ukrainian folk art, determined by the interaction of the natural environment, historical conditions, worldview concepts, and aesthetic ideals of the people, are examined. Particular attention is paid to the role of natural images-plant, animal, elemental, and cosmogonic – in the creation of ornamental compositions and their influence on the choice and combination of colors. The main coloristic systems of traditional ornaments from various regions of Ukraine are analyzed, and the dominance of certain tonal groups and their symbolism is identified. The significance of basic colors (red, black, white, blue, yellow, and green) as carriers of sacred, ritual, and emotional-imagery meanings is highlighted. The regularities of using color contrasts, nuanced transitions, rhythmic repetitions, and accents that ensure the integrity, harmony, and expressiveness of ornamental composition are outlined. It is proven that traditional Ukrainian ornamentation is based on a deep understanding of coloristic balance and natural harmony. The article also reveals the artistic and aesthetic function of color as a means of shaping the emotional impact of a work, emphasizing its semantic structure, and enhancing the symbolic meaning of images. The relevance of interpreting traditional coloristic solutions in the context of contemporary design practice is emphasized, where folk heritage serves as an important source of creative inspiration and ideological authenticity. The significance of these objectives for the formation of coloristic competence of future designers is substantiated, as well as for the development of the ability to consciously perceive, analyze, and creatively reproduce color solutions, taking into account their emotional, symbolic, and cultural context. It is proven that systematic engagement with the Ukrainian ornamental tradition contributes to the formation of designers’ professional thinking and the preservation of national artistic identity in the modern visual environment.
