AUTHORIAL AND CURATORIAL PROJECTS OF RUSTEM SKYBIN: PRESERVATION, REPRESENTATION AND CULTURAL DIPLOMACY OF CRIMEAN TATAR ART

The article presents an art-historical analysis of three landmark cultural and artistic projects by the contemporary Crimean Tatar ceramic artist, People’s Artist of Ukraine Rustem Skybin: “Qalqan / Shield” (2023–2026), “Zincir / Chain – Links of Memory” (2023), and “Yol / Path” (2021). The conceptual foundations, artistic and technological principles, and communicative strategy of these projects are examined in the context of the revival and international representation of the Crimean Tatar artistic heritage. It is demonstrated that the three projects form a coherent model of cultural action in which “Qalqan / Shield” draws upon the material and terminological foundation of traditional ceramics restored through “Zincir / Chain” and inherits the methodology of sociocultural project design developed within “Yol / Path.” It is argued that Rustem Skybin’s artistic practice in the Quru Isar style is integrated with his curatorial and institutional activity within the NGO “El Cheber / Land of Masters,” forming a model of “artisticcivic collaboration” that addresses the consequences of cultural genocide and the temporary occupation of Crimea. Four key mechanisms underpinning the effectiveness of these projects are identified: multidisciplinarity; systematic cooperation with state and international institutions; rigorous art-historical research of historical artefacts in world museum collections; and the use of the artistic object as “soft power” in Ukraine’s public diplomacy. Particular attention is given to the exhibition tour of “Qalqan / Shield” in Kyiv, Sofia, Vilnius, Riga, New York, and London, as well as to the creation of the symbolic panel “Universe / Dünya / Всесвіт” for the Fifth Crimea Platform Summit at the UN General Assembly. It is concluded that Rustem Skybin’s projects serve as a vital instrument for asserting the cultural subjectivity of the Crimean Tatar people and shaping a positive image of Ukraine in the world amid the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war
