REPRESENTATION OF FOLK TRADITIONS IN UKRAINIAN ART OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY

Abstract

The aim of the article is to identify the ways in which folk visual traditions influenced Ukrainian art in the second half of the 20th century. The use of motifs, elements and styles of traditional folk culture in painting, graphics, decorative and applied and decorative and monumental arts is considered. Methods of updating the artistic language and the results of the influence of Ukrainian folk art on this process are determined in synthesis with other sources that contributed to the formation of the identity of Ukrainian art of the studied period, in particular in its orientation towards the achievements of modernism. The creative discoveries of certain artists are analyzed, including the sixties, who worked in Ukrainian painting and rediscovered the beauty and value of the creative achievements of Ukrainian folk art. Means of updating the art of graphics are revealed by artists who worked in both easel graphics and book illustration. The article examines achievements in decorative and applied arts of this period, which turned into a unique phenomenon precisely due to the continuation of national traditions, which noticeably took place in Kyiv, Lviv and in the Poltava region. Achievements in monumental and decorative art, which purposefully turned to ethnographic motifs and elements, are emphasized. The results indicate that folk art helped Ukrainian artists preserve cultural codes and express the national spirit, making art recognizable and original. Orientation to folk traditions became not just an archaic heritage, but a living source of inspiration for modernization and the creation of a new aesthetic. The process of updating visual traditions and orientation to the ideas of folk art was part of a broader movement of national revival aimed at preserving cultural identity in the conditions of dominance of Soviet ideology.
