This article presents the use of immersion in historical reconstruction during the creation of applied graphic art compositions by students of the 023 “Fine Arts, Decorative Arts, and Restoration” programme. The technology employed enabled students to deepen their own knowledge and acquire new insights into the history and culture of medieval Lutsk during the reign of Grand Duke Vytautas. The article explores the possibilities of combining academic analysis of form with the creative reinterpretation of historical images and events within the specific historical setting of Lubart’s Castle (Lutsk, Ukraine). This article presents a selection of students’ compositions and provides an analysis of these works in relation to the development of the given theme. Illustration emerged as the form of composition in applied graphic art on historical themes. The artistic graphic means used to create the artistic form of practical tasks (line, shape, colour) have been identified. The students’ understanding and anticipation of a hypothetical context for the use of their creative– executed illustrations enabled them to produce meaningful works. The systematisation of these works allowed the graphic compositions to be identified as illustrations for book publications on pages and fly-titles. Black-and-white illustrative drawings always complement the text layout well in printed publications. Colour illustrations were intended for the books cover design and calendars, as well as for posters, thematic advertising posters and the like. The graphic composition has been identified and classified as easel art in the style of contemporary art, based on specific emotions of horror, pain and despair in the face of mortal danger The predominance of emotional content over the concise form of primitivism determines the use of the work in contemporary art exhibition spaces, as well as in illustrations for publications of a psychological nature. It is revealed that the development of new generations of young artists took place through the use of a method of engaging with tradition – the recreation of situations with the goal of creating a specific artistic form. The emotional cultural development of young people was demonstrated through immersion in the subject matter of the illustrative series
